DOCUMENT LEGALIZATION AND AUTHENTICATION
Purpose
To certify the authenticity of a document so it will be recognized by a foreign country's legal system.
Process
Involves a series of certifications by different authorities, starting with a local notary and ending with the embassy or consulate of the destination country.
Common Documents
Birth certificates, marriage certificates, educational diplomas, commercial invoices, and other legal documents.
Purpose
To verify the signatures, stamps, or seals on a document, ensuring they are genuine and recognized by foreign authorities.
Process
Typically done by a government authority (e.g., Secretary of State in the U.S.) who confirms that the document has been notarized correctly. ○ The U.S. Department of State authenticates documents using the imprint of its Seal. The Authentication Office signs and issues certificates under the Seal.
